✅ Visiting a Dispensary
Do I need a medical card to buy at a New Mexico dispensary?
No. New Mexico is an adult-use state — anyone 21 or older with a valid government ID can purchase at a licensed dispensary, regardless of what state they live in. The separate medical program offers enrolled patients tax advantages and higher purchase limits.
Can I pay with a credit card at a dispensary?
Usually not. Federal banking restrictions keep most credit card networks out of cannabis. Expect cash-only or ATM-style debit workarounds with a small fee. Most dispensaries have an ATM on site.
Can I smell or inspect products before buying?
Sealed retail products can't be opened in the store, but many dispensaries keep display 'sniff jars' of flower so you can evaluate aroma. Budtenders can also describe flavor and effect profiles for anything in the case.
How much money should I bring for a first dispensary visit?
You can have a great first visit for $25-60. A single pre-roll runs about $5-15, a pack of low-dose edibles $15-30, and an eighth of flower $25-60. There's no minimum purchase, and starting small is genuinely the smart play.

⚖️ Cannabis Laws on the Border
Can El Paso residents legally buy cannabis in Sunland Park?
Yes. New Mexico has no residency requirement — any adult 21 or older with valid government ID can purchase at a licensed dispensary. The catch: everything you buy must stay in New Mexico. Bringing it back into Texas violates both Texas and federal law.
What happens if I'm caught with cannabis in Texas?
Possession of 2 ounces or less of flower is a Class B misdemeanor carrying up to 180 days in jail and a $2,000 fine. Concentrates — including vape cartridges and infused edibles — fall under a harsher penalty group where small amounts can be charged as felonies. Enforcement varies by county, but the statutory penalties are what you risk.
Are there Border Patrol checkpoints near legal dispensaries?
Yes. Border Patrol operates permanent interior checkpoints on highways throughout the El Paso–Las Cruces region. Checkpoints enforce federal law, under which cannabis remains illegal regardless of New Mexico's state legalization.
Can I smoke in public or in my car in New Mexico?
No. Public consumption is prohibited in New Mexico — legal consumption happens on private property with the owner's permission or in licensed consumption areas. Consuming in a vehicle is also illegal, and driving under the influence of cannabis is a DWI.

🧪 THC, CBD & Cannabinoids
Does CBD get you high?
No. CBD is non-intoxicating — it does not produce the euphoria or altered perception of THC. At very high doses some people feel drowsy or deeply relaxed, but there is no 'high' in the traditional sense.
Will CBD show up on a drug test?
Standard drug tests look for THC metabolites, not CBD. However, full-spectrum CBD products can legally contain up to 0.3% THC, which can accumulate with regular use and trigger a positive result. Broad-spectrum and isolate products carry lower risk, but no product can guarantee a negative test.
What does a 1:1 THC to CBD ratio mean?
A 1:1 product contains equal amounts of THC and CBD — for example, 5mg of each per gummy. The CBD tempers the intensity of the THC, producing a milder, smoother experience. It is one of the most recommended starting points for new consumers.
Can you take THC and CBD together?
Yes — they are often intentionally combined. CBD can soften THC's less pleasant edges, like anxiety or a racing heart, which is why ratio products exist and why keeping a CBD gummy on hand is a common safety strategy for THC users.

🍬 Edibles & Dosing
How long do edibles take to kick in?
Edibles can take anywhere from 45 minutes to 3 full hours to take effect, depending on your metabolism and whether you have eaten recently. Never take a second dose before the first one has had time to fully kick in.
How many mg of edibles should a beginner take?
First-timers should start with 1-2.5mg of THC (a micro-dose) and wait at least two hours before considering more. 5mg is a standard starting dose for those with some experience, while 10mg can be overwhelming for novices.
Why do edibles feel stronger than smoking?
When you eat cannabis, your liver converts Delta-9 THC into 11-hydroxy-THC, a more potent compound that crosses the blood-brain barrier more easily. That is why a 10mg edible feels significantly heavier than a 10mg inhaled dose, and why effects last much longer.
What should I do if I get too high from an edible?
Stay calm — the feeling will pass. A dose of CBD-only oil or a CBD gummy can help modulate THC's psychoactive effects. Drink water, move to a comfortable space, and try sniffing or chewing black peppercorns, an old-school trick for grounding yourself during an uncomfortable high.

💨 Consumption Methods
What is the difference between vaping and smoking flower?
Smoking flower combusts the plant material, producing smoke with a strong lingering aroma and the full entourage effect of natural cannabinoids and terpenes. Vaporizers heat concentrated cannabis oil below the point of combustion, producing a smoother vapor that dissipates quickly with minimal odor.
What are dabs and are they good for beginners?
Dabs are cannabis concentrates like wax, shatter, and rosin — products stripped of plant material, leaving pure cannabinoids and terpenes, often at 70-90% THC. Because of the extreme potency and specialized equipment required, dabbing is not recommended for novices.
Do vape pens smell like weed?
Vape pens produce minimal odor. The vapor dissipates within seconds and does not cling to furniture, clothing, or rooms the way smoke does, which makes vapes the most discreet consumption method for apartment dwellers.
Which cannabis consumption method is the strongest?
Concentrates (dabs) are by far the most potent method, often testing at 70-90% THC compared to roughly 15-30% for flower. Vape oils fall in between but are still highly concentrated — a single pull can be surprisingly potent for beginners.
