The Short Answer
There is no legal cannabis for sale in El Paso, and there will not be until Texas law changes. But El Paso is an unusual city: it is pressed against a state line, and on the other side of that line New Mexico has run legal adult-use sales since 2022. The result is a ring of 43 licensed dispensaries around the 915 — the nearest of them a shorter drive from downtown than the far east side.
So the honest version of “cannabis near El Paso” is this: you are not looking for a shop in town. You are looking at a fifteen-minute drive to Sunland Park, a half-hour up Dyer to Chaparral, or a run out Artcraft to Santa Teresa. No border crossing, no passport, no checkpoint — just a state line.

Cannabis bought legally in New Mexico becomes illegal the moment it crosses back into Texas. Not a technicality — a criminal offense under Texas law, and a federal one for crossing state lines. Buy there, consume there.

The Four Border Towns
Sunland Park — the main strip
Twenty-four dispensaries, more than the other three towns combined. Sunland Park borders El Paso’s west side directly, and its two commercial corridors — McNutt Road and Appaloosa Drive — have become the de facto cannabis district of the border. Federal checkpoints are a real thing here
There is no checkpoint between El Paso and Sunland Park or Santa Teresa. There are interior Border Patrol checkpoints on the highways heading north and west out of the region — including I-10 toward Las Cruces. Cannabis is still illegal under federal law at those checkpoints, whatever New Mexico says.

Your First Trip Across
- Bring a physical ID. 21+, government-issued, not expired. A photo on your phone will not do it.
- Bring cash or a debit card. Cannabis remains federally illegal, so credit card acceptance is inconsistent. Most shops have an ATM.
- Expect to budget for tax. New Mexico adds a 12% excise tax on adult-use sales on top of gross receipts tax. Medical cardholders are exempt.
- Start low if you are new. Especially with edibles — read Edibles 101 before you buy.
- Plan where you will consume. Not in the car, not in public, not back over the line. A licensed consumption lounge is the one legal option for visitors.

Is weed legal in El Paso, Texas?
No. Recreational cannabis is illegal in Texas and there are no dispensaries in El Paso. Texas runs a narrow low-THC Compassionate Use Program for a limited set of medical conditions, but nothing resembling a retail dispensary exists in the city. No — this trips up a lot of visitors. Sunland Park, Santa Teresa, Chaparral and Anthony are all in the United States. You are crossing a state line from Texas into New Mexico. No passport, no port of entry, no wait.
